History of Surrey
The City of Surrey was incorporated in 1879 and encompasses an area of 315.5 square kilometres. Surrey has a long history dating back to its early inhabitation by the Coast Salish peoples. The first European settlement in Surrey was established in 1827 by Hugh McRoberts, who built a farm on 150 acres (61 hectares) of land near what is now present-day Whalley. In 1858, following the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush, SURREY was incorporated as a district municipality. The current city centre was developed in the late 19th century and early 20th century, with residential neighbourhoods being built after the end of World War II.
