Traditional disinfectants are only effective for a short time and do not protect surfaces from future debris. With traditional disinfectants, pathogens are only destroyed during the wet time of applying the disinfectant, and once dried, the surface is prone to harbouring bacteria and viruses. Select Shield Cleaning 360’s disinfectant, and antimicrobial protectant leaves a protective coating on the surface. The protective layer can last 7-10 days while ensuring the destruction of any new pathogens that might come in contact with the surface. What are Antimicrobial Coatings?

The antimicrobial coatings industry has been growing rapidly and yet quietly. Now considered a billion-dollar industry, antimicrobial coatings are designed to inhibit the growth of microorganisms (germs, bacteria, viruses, mold) on a variety of surfaces. They are generally non-toxic, odorless, colorless, and hypoallergenic.

Antimicrobial coatings are typically applied to counters, tables, walls, door handles, and other high-touch areas; HVAC vents and mechanicals, aircraft interiors; and many other hard and soft surfaces. In some cases, they are infused into textiles, masks, gloves, and carpeting to reduce the spread and cross-contamination of various pathogens, such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus that is at the root of the 2020 global pandemic. Even construction companies are spraying antimicrobial products onto the insulation, drywall, plywood, and more to inhibit the growth of pathogens such as mold.

What are the different types of Antimicrobial Coatings?

There are several types of mechanisms for antimicrobial coatings such as silver, copper, and zinc ions, ultraviolet light, or various bactericides and viral inhibitors. However, they all have various limitations which is why we use the more effective quaternary ammonium chloride, QAC for short.

How long do antimicrobial coatings last?

That all depends on how high the touch of a surface it is. With low to medium contact and regular cleaning procedures the coating can last between 10 to 15 days. Higher traffic touch areas or surfaces regularly cleaned with a more abrasive or caustic cleanser may require a re-application more frequently.

What is the difference between cleaners, sanitizers, disinfectants, and antimicrobials?

For the purpose of this question “pests” are bacteria, viruses, fungi, germs, or microbes. Cleaners or detergents do not kill pests, and cleaners cannot legally claim they will kill pests. Sanitizers are a combination of a detergent and disinfectant and can reduce the number of microorganisms on a surface. Whereas a disinfectant kills or inactivates almost all pathogens. An antimicrobial is a substance that also kills microorganisms AND ALSO inhibits the future growth of microorganisms and acts as a protection to the surface it covers.

How are antimicrobial coatings applied?

After all surfaces have been thoroughly cleaned our trained technicians using a two-step process that first applies the disinfectant with an electrostatic sprayer to more effectively cover hard to reach areas. After the surface has dried then Select Shield 360 Antimicrobial is applied, again with an electrostatic sprayer. The spray contains positively charged particles that are able to aggressively cling to and coat any surface they are directed at. As the chemical exits the electrostatic sprayer, it is atomized and given a positive electrical charge. The droplets travel toward the targeted surface and become attracted to it, reaching not only visible areas, the underside and backside of objects.1

Main features and benefits of electrostatic spray disinfection?

Think of a 360-degree wraparound effect. Surfaces already covered will repel the excess spray droplets forcing them to find another surface that has not been covered yet. Essentially, SELECT SHIELD’s process of applying the antimicrobial coating is more efficient and less wasteful.1

What should I use to clean with after the coating has been applied?

Normal cleaning and disinfecting should be done regularly to remove dirt, dust and dead microbes which could coat the treated surface and limit the nanoscopic coating from killing microorganisms that come in contact with it. Antimicrobial coatings cannot be cleaned off unless aggressive abrasives are used.

How long does it take to dry?

Given our disinfectant and Select Shield 360 Antimicrobial Coating are applied with an electrostatic sprayer, the droplets are up to 90 times smaller than a traditional sprayer. This finer spray dries within minutes after bonding to a surface. We recommend waiting 15-20 minutes to re-enter your office, facility, or home.

When the treatment takes place can I stay in my office or home?

It is recommended your office, facility or home be empty, but there are times when that may not be feasible. Antimicrobial coatings are non-toxic so it is safe, but good practice when applying chemicals is to have proper PPE. However, we require that a space / room be emptied during the treatment and for 15-20 minutes after.
