First Nations

The Sunshine Coast is home to breathtaking natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and rich history. This area has been inhabited for centuries by the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh), Sechelt (Shíshálh), and Sliammon (Tla’Amin) First Nations, who are part of the larger Coast Salish people. The Coast Salish were expert fishermen, hunters, and traders, and their culture was renowned for its totem poles, cedar canoes, and unique language. Today, the Coast Salish people continue contributing culturally and economically to the Sunshine Coast.

Settlement by Europeans 

The first Europeans and other non-native peoples settled in the area in the 1880s, attracted by the abundance of fish and timber. Logging and fishing were the main occupations of the settlers, along with small-scale farming, mainly for their subsistence. Over time, more and more people moved to the Sunshine Coast, drawn by its beauty and potential for economic opportunities. The naming of “The Sunshine Coast” originated with a pioneer family: the Roberts of Roberts Creek. The Roberts was one of the first families to settle in the area, credited with giving the Sunshine Coast its name. Today, the Sunshine Coast is a vibrant and thriving community with a diverse economy and a rich history. It is an excellent place to live, work, and raise a family.
