History of Surrey

History of Abbotsford

The first residents of the Abbotsford area were the Stó:lō Nation, who lived along the Fraser River and shared the land with a variety of other indigenous groups. European settlement began in 1858 when the Royal Engineers surveyed the area in response to the gold rush along the Fraser River. The settlement initially grew slowly, but by the late 1860s, butter, milk, and tobacco production had begun. In 1889, former Royal Engineer John Cunningham Maclure applied for a Crown grant to obtain the 160 acres (0.65 km2) that would become Abbotsford. The city was named after Lord Aberdeen, the British Secretary of State for War during Maclure’s tenure with the Royal Engineers. Home to the oldest Sikh temple in North America, Abbotsford has a long and diverse history. The temple building was constructed in 1908 and opened in 1911, serving as a gathering place for Sikh immigrants who arrived in British Columbia during the early 1900s. Today, Abbotsford is a thriving city with a population of over 150,000 people. Thanks to its rich history and multiculturalism, Abbotsford is an exciting place to live and visit.
